NEW FIRE STATION

NOT YET COMPLETED

A FRESH ESTIMATE

There have been a number of estimates as to when the new Central Fire Station on the site formerly occupied by the Clyde Quay School will be ready for occupation by the brigade, but all have .been astray. The latest estimate is by the end of this month or early in November, but it was stated today that even if everything is in readiness by that time it might not be practicable or expedien for the brigade to move in and operate from this bass until a week or two later.

The reason given for this suggestion was that the concrete riooring of the spacious engine hall has only just been laid and that it will be necessary to allow it to dry out before bringing the heavier fire engines and the escapeladder machine on to it. j

For all practical purposes there is not a great deal to be done to the station building except general cleaning up and finishing work. The engine hall has a high cream-toned ceiling and the lower walls are tiled and have a brown border. Another feature is the huge running doors on the street frontage. These have still to be glazed; also there is still some painting to be done on the walls, and the intention is to paint the floor red. At the rear of the building the drill yard has to be attended to, although a start has been made with this work. The men's quarters on the higher level with an entrance from Roxburgh Street are ready for occupation. The quarters comprise flats which are to be used by the married men. They overlook a central area, which is to be made into a shrubbery and tennis court. The flats vary in size and are fitted with some of the latest appointments.

The tall tower of the station building has been used to house the Blundell clock, which has had no permanent Home since the demolition of the Town Hall tower. The clock has been fitted with new clear, white faces, which should make it much easier to read than was so in the case of some people when the old type faces were in use during the clock's occupancy of the Town Hall tower. The new faces! have been in position for some weeks, but the hands have yet to go on. j
