EFFECTS OF GAS
OBSERVATIONS AT LOTIEN
LONDON, October 11. The' Shanghai correspondent of the "Daily Telegraph" says that Japanese poisonous and searing gases are causing terrible mutilations at Lotien. Officers who witnessed the gassing state that during the barrages in the sector where the Japanese were consistently defeated shells exploded normally, but after a few seconds greenish-black smoke clouds rose from the ground, expanded, and remained in the hollows for several hours. Officers report that 80 men were gassed and that 40 died. Chinese experts declare that the shells unquestionably show traces of poison. Foreign experts have been invited to examine fragments with a view to obtaining an impartial opinion. The "Daily Mail's" Shanghai correspondent says the Chinese troops believe that the rain preventing Japanese attacks is due to the beneficence of the Cloud Dragon. The floods are so hampering the Japanese at Shanghai that many of the troops are being provisioned by parachutes from aeroplanes.
