DUNEDIN CLASSIC

BREEDING OF COMPENSATE

(By "Binocular.") During the period 1924 to 1937, two-year-olds by Paper Money havs won the D.J.C. McLean Stakes on six occasions. Overdrawn carried off the Honours in 1924, Scrip in 1925, Wealth in 1931, Guarantee- in 1932, Card Player last year, and now Compensate, this year's winner. Last Note, the dam of Compensate, was by Song Bird from Hard Cash by Penates (a son of Ruenalf) from San Severo,. by Sant Ilario (son of. St. Leger), and she traces back to the Mermaid taproot. Song Bird was a winner Of the C.J.C. Great Easter Handicap and other good races. The grandsire Penates was also a brilliant performer, figuring in the records as a winner of [the Great Easter Handicap, the Stewards' Handicap, Winter Cup, etc, It is a coincidence that Song Bird and Hard Cash died within the same season, the latter in giving birth to Compensation, a half-brother to Last Note. Although List Note never raced. Compensation showed undoubted brilliance during his comparatively brief racing career, and it is now evident that the brilliance is being handed on. As a two-year-old Compensation won the two juvenile events at the Dunedin Christmas Meeting in 1930, and he then added the DJ.C. Champagne Stakes in the autumn. As a three-year-old he won five races, including the Metropolitan Handicap at Trentham and the James Hazlett Gold Cup at Dunedin Unfortunately, he failed to stand up to racing. Whereas Compensation was owned by Mr- R. R. McDonald, Compensate races in the colours of a brother, Mr. D. J. McDonald, and is trained by H. A. McDonald on a private track at Mosgiel, Mobile and Half Note have carried Mr. D. J. McDonald's colours successfully in recent years, and the latter will be remembered as the payer of a big dividend at Riccarton last year,. It is rather surprising that mares who can produce horses of the undoubted merit of Compensation and Compensate should not figure in the present Stud Book. The family is quite eligible for inclusion, and it is a wonder that returns have not been sent in before now to the keeper of the Stud Book that would comply with the necessary formalities and thus add greatly to the value of the mares and their progeny. OFFER FOR FLOOD TIDE (United Press Association—By Klectrle. Telegraph—Copyright.) MELBOURNE, October 8. Mr. Desmond Davis, owner of Flood Tide, arrived at Melbourne today. He refused a big offer for the Tidal gelding, made on behalf of Messrs. Freeman and Stanley, owners of. Silver Standard. . • Avenger showed improvement today, and a decision whether he will run in the Guineas will be made following a consultation between the trainer, J. Holt, and the owner, Mr. Percy Miller, who is expected at Melbourne tonight. S. Burgoine will ride Vaalmore in the Melbourne Cup, and H. Bastian I Stevenage in the Caulfield Cup.
