FINE GOAL KICKING

MATCH AT CHRISTCHURCH

(By Telegraph—Press Association.)

CHRISTCHURCH, This Day,

The last representative match of the season was played in rain at Lancaster Park this afteroon between Canterbury and South Canterbury.

South Canterbury were penalised early and McAuliffe took advantage of the wind to kick a splendid penalty goal from the half-way line. Canterbury 3, South Canterbury 0. South Canterbury" were showing plenty of vim in the forwards and twice passing rushes of the backs tested the Canterbury defence, which, however, stood the test well. South Canterbury infringed and from eight yards from the side line McAuliffe kicked another penalty goal. Canterbury 6, South Canterbury 0. A minute later Canterbury heeled cleanly and, taking an awkward pass from Mortlock in good style, Pawson dummied his way through at the centre, ran down to Lundy and sent out a pass which let Busfield over eight yards from the corner. McAuliffe again goaled. Canterbury 11, South Canterbury 0.

McAuliffe was having a wonderful day. His next penalty kick also sailed between the posts, making Canterbury 14, South Canterbury 0. South Canterbury's first try came when the home side instituted a passing rush in their own twenty-five. Pawson attempted a pass and Ryan, the visitors' right wing, intercepted and had an easy run in. Canterbury 14, South Canterbury 3, Long kicking took Canterbury into their opponents' territory and another penalty saw McAuliffe kick still another goal, five kicks and every one successful. Canterbury 17, South Canterbury 3. Cartwright tried a shot at goal for South Canterbury, but it had little chance against the heavy wind. Herman and Rankin bustled Lundy and booted the ball over, Herman touching down for a try. McAuliffe missed this kick, the easiest one he had had. The score at .half-time was: Canterbury 20, South Canterbury 3.
