COMPOSITE TITLES
The Buffs, the Fencibles, the Enniskillens, the Guards—these were crisp military titles fit for the battlefield or the barrack square, but if you seek round London today and note the military quarters and their labels, you will encounter long strings of letters painted in white on the green buildings which house various units of the Territorial Army. Perhaps, the old City of London Yeomanry, under its new title, is the worst example. In an endeavour to incorporate in its designation all that has been incorporated in the unit, it has been branded as follows:—The City of London Yeomanry Battery (the Roughriders), 11th (Honourable Artillery Company and City of London Yeomanry) Brigade Royal Horse Artillery. It need not be supposed that even this will kill the old fighting spirit. When the occasion arises, the commander doubtless will cry: "Up. C.L.Y.8.R.R., 11th H.A.C.C.L.Y.8.R.H.A., and at 'em."
