NGAIO CLUB

The annual tourney for the championship of the Ngaio Chess Club was concluded last week, the first prize being won by E. E. Hicks, who retains the title that he won a year ago, and enhances his fine match record. He made the good score of 11 wins, 1 draw, and 1 loss. The second and third positions are still in doubt, the next best scores being as follows: —C. L. Maloney, 9 and 1 to play; F. J. Brooker. 8; H. N. Robie, 7£ and 2 to play; and T. G. Fouhy, 7£ with 1 to play. The club's championship has been won five times byS. Faulknor, five times by E. E. Hicks, four times by J. Lindsay, three times by F. K. Kelling, twice by G. A. Jones, and once each by A. B. Topp, F. J. Brooker, and W. J. Carman Mr. Carman's win in 1917 gave him the honour of being the first member to occupy rung 1 on the club's ladder which was made by a former hon. secretary, Mr. A. S. Green, out of timber from the wreck of the Penguin. The following names are on the club's junior championship roll:— 1923 and 1925 W. J. Hicks; 1924, 1928, 1929. 1930, and 1936, J. A. Glasgow; 1926 and 1927. H. J. Topp; 1931, J. S. Harrison; • 1932, 1933, and 1935, R. A. Godtschalk; and 1934, H. Stringer.
