LONDON HIDE MARKET
Weddel and Co., writing London, August 5, reported that the North American situation was satisfactory. Sales of "actuals" had been made at last prices and there were good reports about the future of the market. Europe had not been a very keen buyer but realised that the market was firming up and that nothing, would be gained by waiting. All miscellaneous and colonial varieties which had been marked up to higher prices had not found buyers and would not do so until the more important hide markets become active. New Zealand freezer cowhides 30-501b found a ready market at 7 3-8 dto 7£d, and are now held for l-8d to id more, but it was going to be difficult to make progress. The leather market was quiet, but the tone was satisfactory. "Tanners are firm in their ideas and likely to continue so some weeks ahead especially this side of the autumn leather fair."
