Sir, —One wonders if the general public are quite as innocent as the politicians would lead us to believe. Of what use are increased salaries and wages, when the whole of the increase —and more—is being taken back in taxes and the increased cost of living? It reminds us of the boy who informed a visitor that his mother always gave him a penny if he took his dose of cod liver oil without making a face. "And what do you do with the money?" asked the visitor. "Oh, mother buys more cod liver oil with it."—I am, etc.,
