BOXERS FOR GAMES
THOSE IN THE RUNNING
The New Zealand amateur boxing championships at Greymouth last week produced boxers of good standard in some divisions, but other classes were not so good and consequently it is not to be expected that all those who won titles will be sent to the British Empire Games at Sydney next year. Furthermore, the officials were not entirely satisfied that the titlewinners invariably represented the best talent in their respective divisions.
The selection of the boys who are to go to Sydney will be made following the receipt by the New Zealand Council of a report by the referees who acted at the tournament, Messrs. Earl Stewart (Wellington), D. Patterson (Dunedin), and A. B. Joplin (Auckland). After considering this report! the council will proceed to submit its nominations to the Olympic and British Empire Games Association.
LIGHTWEIGHT CANDIDATES. If it is decided to send a flyweight! representative to Sydney then H. Sheridan (Auckland), who was awarded the Jamieson Belt, should be certain of a trip. D. Collins (Manawatu), who not only won the lightweight title but also created a highly favourable impression by his skilful boxing, is a strong candidate, but the unsatisfactory manner in which Norm. Fisher (Christchurch) was eliminated in a semi-final may result in his being given another trial. Tommy Dunn, the Hutt Valley" representative, is another who still, has a chance, and it has been suggested that he and Fisher should be matched. Collins, however, will be hard to displace.
