LOCKNIT'S PROMISE
SECOND DAY AT AVONDALE
(Special from "Early Bird.")
AUCKLAND, This Day. After his fruitless trip to Riccarton, High Quality is down to make his reappearance over the sticks at Avondale on Monday. As the class is not very high he may make amends for his southern failures.
Tonnerre was regarded as a Railway Handicap possibility last Boxing Day, butv he was injured through coming into contact with the rails during the running. He has been entered for the open sprint on the second day at Avondale, and, if anywhere near his best, ho should, take some beating.
Kelly is to be given a i-un in the sprint at Avondale on Monday, and this will tend to sharpen him up for later handicap events, the Mitchelson Cup at Ellerslie three weeks hence probably being his mission. He has been working nicely at headquarters, and, while he can still do with plenty of work, a run on Monday will help to bring him along. NOT LIKELY TO RUN. It was thought that High Commissioner would have had his next race at Avondale on Monday, but latest reports from Te Rapa indicate that he is being kept for the Waikato Hunt Cup at Cambridge on Labour Day. This gelding won over the sticks at Ellerslie a month back, and, as he has a second in a Great Northern Steeplechase, his presence in the Cambridge cross-country event may tend to limit the field. One of the unlucky hacks at the Pakuranga Hunt Meeting last month was Locknit, for after making up some ground in the middle stages, he was right up behind the leading division at the home turn. Then he was carried out very wide, and this made his task hopeless. Nevertheless, he should not be long in getting on the winning list. He was engaged at Avondale today and the minor hack sprint on Monday may see him again showing up. . Card Sharper has been a disappointment in recent" outings, and either he has been overrated or maybe he will do better on a big track. He showed plenty of speed at both New Plymouth and Wanganui, but he is now at Avondale and is carded for the minor hack sprint on Monday. It will be interesting to see if thjs hack will shape better over the big Avondale course, even in what promises to be a large field. After his failure at Ellerslie last month, when he started favourite in the Jellicoe Handicap, Erndale has been out of the news. However, it is probable that he will be produced at Avondale on Monday, for he is in the mile and a quarter and the open sixfurlong races, and the easy going should suit him. A free goer, he may be a surprise packet, even in the good class he will find levelled against him. THE VAMP'S CHANCE. The Vamp gave the field a start and then ran Tip Toes to a neck over a mile at Ellerslie last month. No matter what her fate was today, she should be suited by the New Lynn Hack on Monday, for this is also a mile contest and she sticks on well.
Royal Appellant registered the best six furlongs one morning recently at headquarters, and doubtless on that, gallop he was fancied in some quarters for a six-furlong race today. He has been kept going throughout the winter, and he should have the necessary condition for the big event on Monday.
Mazir is due to make his reappearance on a racecourse at the Taumarunui fixture at Paeroa today fortnight, having been accorded a nomination in the sprint race on the first day. Last season the, big chestnut son of Whirlwind was one of the province's best gallopers, and now that he has had a good spell he may come up better than ever. There is good prize-money to be picked up at the Waikato and Takapuna fixtures, the last big gatherings prior to the midsummer carnival at Ellerslie.
A .good handicap performer about due to unfurl the colours again is Master Brierly, who will probably be produced at Avondale on Monday. His programme includes a race or two at Paeroa, and then he should be ready to take on the Mitchelson Cup next month. He has been given plenty of long work and looks fairly well forward.
