OBITUARY

MR. JOHN BATES

Mr. John Bates, principal of the firm of John Bates and Co., Ltd., china and crystal specialists, of Cashel Street, Christchurch, died at Kaikoura last week as the result of a fall. With Mrs. Bates, he arrived from Christchurch in the course of a holiday trip, and as he was walking up the steps of the Club Hotel, he fell and sustained concussion. 'An operation was performed, but he did not recover, and died the next day.

Mr. Bates, who was seventy-seven years of age, established the business of John Bates and Co. when he was twenty-three years of age. He is survived by Mrs. Bates and two sons and three daughters. The sons are Messrs. John E. Bates, of Auckland, and Sidney Bates, of Wellington, and the daughters are Mrs. Charles Bell, Mrs. Henry Vale, and Mrs. Tinker, all of Chrlstchurcb
