The "Chronicle" reports that following heavy withdrawals on Tuesday, half of the 8500 bales of wool offered at today's wool sales were withdrawn. The market is disturbed owing to Japan's failure to buy in the recent Australian sales, also to the possibility of Japan not fulfilling its agreement to buy 500,000 additional bales from Australia by June. Sellers' refusal to cut prices indicates a belief that Japan will soon return to the market. SLIGHTLY BETTER TONE. Wright, Stephenson. and Co., Ltd., and Abraham and Williams, Ltd., report having received cable advice from their Bradford agent regarding the tops market reading as follows:—"Merino tops were Id down and crossbred top* id down, but only a little business was done. Estimated production: Gold, 4000oz; copper, 162 tons. ROAD CYCLING SENIORS AND JUNIORS .Tomorrow, the Poneke Amateur Cycling Club is to hold a combined senior and junior road race. Several of the junior riders have been showing great form this season, and it will be interesting to see how they will fare against theseniors. EMPIRE GAMES RIDERS The New Zealand Amateur Cycling Association has decided to appoint two selectors of cyclists for the British Empire • Games team, one from the North Island and one from'the South Island, and each centre is to be asked for nomination which must reach the association by September 27. Centres are to bear in mind that nominees must be in a position to attend at Christchurch on October 16, October 20, and January 8, and at Auckland on December 4. At the meeting at which this decision was made permission was given the Wellington Centre to charge an entry fee of 5s for the Palmerston North to Wellington road race. The secretary of the New Zealand Olympic Games Association is to be .asked to supply the results in full of the cycling events at the last Olympic Games. It was decided to adopt as a ruling by the association the Canterbury, Centre's resolution that professionals should not be allowed to push-off competitors at amateur meetings. THEFT OF TOOLS PROBATION FOR YOUTH Five charges of the theft of carpenters' tools were preferred against a youth, Harry Addley, a labourer, aged 18, before Mr. W. F. StilwelL; S.M., in the Magistrate's Court today. He pleaded guilty and was admitted to probation for two years. ' "In your own interests and despita your youth, I make no order suppressing your name," said Mr. Stilwell. "Although this is your first appearanca before this Court, you have been before another Court, and there are three previous instances of theft. This will let you know that you can't get away, with it indefinitely." Detective-Sergeant J. Doyle, . who prosecuted, said that a toolshed in Waterloo Quay was broken into on the night of September 2, and tools valued at £5 10s 6d .were taken. On the weekend of September 5, a padlock was broken from the door of another toolhouse nearby and £5 9s worth of tools was taken. Some of the goods were sold by the accused to a dealer, a false name and address being given. Detective Hogan located'the' defendant, who said that he had found the tools in the grass at Waterloo Quay. Mr. A. J. Mazengarb said that the defendant had. been Industrious and a good worker. He had also helped his famii/. Addley suffered from epilepsy, and there would be the greatest chance of recovering if he were placed on probation. He had been in custody for nine days. Mr. Stilwell said that Dr. RusseJL in an excellent report, dissociated tha epileptic condition from the thefts. Probation would give the best chanc« of recovery.
