BOXING AT TOWN HALL.
Professionals on Thursday.
The Wellington Boxing Association has secured a highly attractive fixture for its next professional programme which will be staged at the Town Hall next Thursday night, September 23. The contestants will be "Smiler" Stan Smith, the former Englishman, who has had more than a little to do with the return to popularity of boxing in Wellington, and Tui Loveridge, who is regarded in Taranaki, his home province, as another Tommy Donovan. The bout will be over the full championship distance of fifteen threeminute rounds. . Stan Smith has become a firmly established favourite with Wellington boxing enthusiasts this season, because of the vigour and "colour" which he infuses into his performances, his opponent being called upon to stand up to a constant whirlwind attack. He has not yet been seen in action in Wellington over fifteen rounds, and it will be interesting to see whether he can maintain his customary hot pace over that distance. The fact that he is one of the fittest boys in the game suggests that he will be able to. Loveridge has been responsible for some sensational performances this year. In his first professional bout he inflicted a heavy defeat upon Ralph Aitken, and he then disposed of Bob Coughlan in three rounds. As an amateur he had one of the best records of any New Zealand boxers, but he is an even greater boxer as a professional, his stamina being a great asset. There will be an entertaining programme of amateur preliminaries.
