THE FLYING-BOAT SERVICE
(From "The Post's" Rearfisontatlvo^
LONDON, August 14,
Eighteen of the Short four-engined monoplane boats have been delivered to Imperial Airways in part fulfilment of the contract placed for twenty-eight. They are emerging from the factory at the rate of two a month, and the contract should oe completed by the end of the year. Probably a few more may be required. Mail loads on the Empire services under the "no surcharge" scheme appear certain to exceed forecasts.
The flying-boats have already taken over the service all the way to South Africa. They may be in operation as far as Karachi before the end of September, and as far as Singapore by October or November. Hopes that they might be flying through to Australia by the beginning of 1938 have been dashed by the message from Melbourne that tells of difficulty in completing the necessary bases between Port Darwin and Sydney before the wet season. June next year now appears to be the earliest date by which the flying-boats may be introduced to the service as far as Sydney.
