THE HATS OF THE DUKE
Twenty-four wealthy Americans returned home after the Coronation, each the proud possessor of a top hat that once had been worn by the Duke of Windsor! Or so they all : thought. Each paid £52 for the "souvenir." The transactions took place in a luxury London hotel. American visitors sitting in the lounge were approached by a suave' man carrying a box. After some whispers they were taken up to, a private room. "This is one of the Duke of Windsor's top hats," explained the man. The Americans examined the hat with its Royal crest and were convinced. "Cheap at £52," said the stranger. "What is more, I've got some others at home." The stranger had' bought two dozen second-hand "toppers." Each was cleaned, pressed, and the new leather band with the Royal crest stitched on. He netted over £600.
