WESTLAND STRIKE
MINISTER'S ULTIMATUM

CHRISTCHURQH, September 6,
"An Intolerable position has arisen, and drastic steps have been necessary," said the Minister of Public Works (the Hon, B. Semple) today, in reference to a strike of eighty men employed by the, Public Works Department on road construction work-at Bruce Bay, South Westland, • ■
Mr. Semple said he had sent the men an ultimatum ordering them to return to the job, and stating that refusal meant dismissal.
Mr. Semnle received, news of the strike 011 Friday, and, as a result oi his investigations, he had satisfied himself that the men had not acted constitutionally within the terms oi the Public Works agreement, and that they had no just cause for striking.
