VISITORS ARRIVE

ASPIRANTS FOR GUINEAS

{Special to the "Evening Post.")

WANGANUI, This Day.

With the weather breaking after a lengthy spell of ideal conditions, the prospects for the Wanganui Jockey Club's Spring. Meeting are such 'that the track will at least be on the dead side, and if the steady rain which set in this afternoon continues the going will be heavy. The soaking rain will have a beneficial effect on the track, especially at the commencement of the spring racing campaign. It was anticipated that some of the visiting trainers might have been inclined to send their charges along this morning and the No. 1 grass track was open for fast work, but none was attempted. ■ ' Haughty Winner and Great Memory, Sir Charles Clifford's pair of three-year-olds, were given strong pace work the day after their arrival and again this morning. The former is a Guineas candidate, and as H. Cutts was not able to give the Winning Hit colt any fast work at Riccarton last week, the final preparation will include a fast workout tomorrow morning and a run in the open sprint oh Thursday. <However, Haughty Winner appears to have done a good deal of work and a race should work considerable improvement in this good colt. Great Memory is engaged in the Maiden Race on Thursday and. looks likely to develop into a useful sort of three-year-old. Royal Chief, a Guineas candidate from F. D. Jones's stable, was another who was given useful work in preparation for his classic engagement. The Chief Ruler colt was also unable to get through as much solid work as his trainer would have wished, but ho will be sharpened up by a race onThursday. The turning track may not suit him. Cerne Abbas and the Lord Warden juvenile Protector did useful work. This youngster is having his first trip away from home and, naturally, travelling by ship and float is strange to him, but he appears to be doing well. Today's arrivals included Greene's team from Hastings and New's Awapuni team, in addition to Mahala, who is engaged in the Okehu Hack Hurdles.
