TABLE TENNIS
N.Z. CHAMPIONSHIPS
PRELIMINARY ROUNDS
Some excellent matches were seen in the preliminary rounds of the New Zealand Table Tennis championships played at the Wellington Winter Show Stadium last night. There was a large entry—over 50 in the men's singles— and the general standard of play was very high. Players came from as far afield as Otago and Auckland. Seventy-eight matches were played last night under official organisation. The finals will be played tonight. The New Zealanl mixed doubles champions, McFarlane (.Wellington) and Miss Strang (Hutt Valley) werel beaten in the first round by the more accurate Auckland pair. Drabble and Miss McAdam, 21-15, 8-21, 16-21. Another surprise was the defeat of the North Island champion, J. Swift, of Auckland, by the young Wellington player Barritt in straight games. Barritt- scored many points with sharplyangled half-volley interspersed with fast drives. The hard-hitting Wellington player, L. Wilson, also secured a surprise victory over the South Island champion, G. Laidlaw (Otago) in straight games. Wilson was too speedy in his driving for Laidlaw. The South Island lady champion, Miss Bennett lOtago) defeated Mrs. Valk (Hutt Valley) and Miss L. Sturrock (Wellington). An excellent game was that between F. Paton, the Auckland champion, and H. N. Bundle, of Wellington. Bundle fought very hard but Paton was too experienced. In the following list of results, A. represents Auckland; H.V..
