MIRAMAR CLUB
The club spirit of the-Miramar District Rugby Football Club was much in evidence .on Saturday .evening when a large number of members attended the annual smoke concert. A varied and entertaining programme was presented an.d was enthusiastically ' received. An apology for absence was received from the Hon. R. Semple. After the loyal toast, Mr. A. W. Cooper, in reviewing the past season, said that on the whole it had been a successful one. Although the teams had been limited the club had always been able to field them regularly and up to strength.' The lower grades had showed definite improvement which had proved itself in the third grade team's winning the championship. The club, he said, had a definite policy of bringing forward the form in the lower grades with the object of building up a good side, and making a combination. Owing to the fact that the City Council was going to take,the gymnasium the club had been using, for workshops for the aerodrome, the clubwas making efforts to obtain a gymnasium of .its. own. The. thanks of the members were due to the ladies" committee which had raised a considerable sum for this purposed ,' • ;'■■;■' Replying to the toast of "The Wellington Rugby Football Union," which was proposed by Mr. Cooper, Mr. G. Jackson, treasurer of' the union, said that with the loyal support of the district and keen members the Miramar Club should become as strong and big as the Petone Club. He congratulated the club on its season's performances and the good appearance of its teams, especially when they had played early games ■at Athletic Park. : .; '■ . The toast. "The Miramar District Rugby Football. Association," was proposed by Mr. J. F. Murphy, who said that four champidnhip wins ins eight years spoke a great deal for the work of the club. He hoped that the club would ultimately win the senior, championship. . ■■:■■'' :■ In reply,, Mr. A. Fong paid tribute to the coaches for their work during the season. He stressed the. importance of training and attendance at the gym-. nasium and said that the third grade team, who had been the best attenders, had won. the. championship., •. .Mr. W. Hawker, who-proposed the toast of "The Coaches," said that the whole success of any club depended on the men who coached the teams, and the Miramar Club had been lucky to have the services of the men. who taught each grade. Mr. A. Bruce replied. ; . The toast, "Kindred Sports," was proposed by Mr. S. Luke and replied to by Mr. J. Koefed. v ■ : ■ The Tutt Cup for the best team performance in the Wellington Rugby Union championship was presented by Mr. Cooper to M. Dumbletpn, captain of the third "grade team, and the Kempton Shield, awarded for the most points scored for and the. least points against, to Mr. W. J. S. Courtney, coach of the third grade team. The artists who gave items during the evening were, Messrs. W. Adcock. B. Murphy, D. Ward, A. Patterson,. D. Hopa. E. Deans, and R. Williams. .
