OBITUARY

MR. F. L. HINDLEY, 0.8. E. The death occurred suddenly at his home in Wellington on Friday of Mr. F. L. Hindley, 0.8. E., who had a distinguished record in the New ' Zealand Forces during the Great War. Mr. Hindley was born at Farnworth, Lancashire, ..in 1881, and received ■ his early education, at Cowley College, St. Helen's, and later at St. Dunstan's, London. He spent three years in South Africa,, and came to New Zealand in 1905. He resided at Timaru where he was attached to the wool department of Pyne, Gould, and, Guinness, Ltd. .He enlisted in the South Canterbury Mounted Rifles in 1914, and left New Zealand with the Main Body as a lance-corporal. He was commissioned in 1915, and, was attached to Records in Egypt and France, being in charge of the New Zealand records section in France. He was mentioned in dispatches five times, received the Order of the British Empire, and returned to New Zealand with the rank of major. He was assistant officer in charge of Base Records at Wellington for a time, and then took up farming in South Canterbury. He returned to Wellington about two years ago to take a position in the Labour Department. He is survived by his widow, one son, and one daughter. ' At the funeral, vwhich took' place at the Soldiers' Cemetery, Karori, this morning/returned soldiers acted as pall bearers. The Wellington Returnedl Soldiers' Association 'was represented by* the president (Lieut.-Colonel. A. Cowles, V.D.), and other, returned soldiers present included Lieut.-Colonel R. S. McQuarrie,. D.5.0., -M.C., Lieut.Colonel H. J. Meade, D.S.O: (representing Base .Records), and Major C. A. L. Treadwell, 0.8. E. The Labour Department was represented by Mr. A: Selman, and Messrs. H. H: Cornish and G. C. Rodda were-also present. The Rev/N.F. Robertshawe conducted the service ■ at- the chapel and at the graveside, and at the conclusion of the latter service the returned soldiers present dropped poppies in the^grave.
