SYDNEY TURF ACTIVITIES

(From "Vedette.")

SYDNEY, August 24.

Talking, who was a disappointment last week on the track, galloped brilliantly at Rosebery today, equalling the time set by Nightmarch of lmin 15isec for six furlongs. Talking was set a task with two two-year-olds to lead him over the first three furlongs in 36sec. He was becoming uneasy in the Epsom market,.but after the gallop this morning his owner, Mr. A. ■E. Cooper, said that his number was in the box.

Genetout is the first of the spring casualties. He was lame over the weekend and the trouble has developed so quickly that he has been , physicked and eased. The weakness is in the near foreleg and so far has baffled the veterinary surgeons. He has been well backed^or the Metropolitan. . . .

' GOLD • ROD WELL.

■ Mala and Gold Rod galloped excep-tionallyl-well .'at Randwick this morning. Mala, to all appearances, has thrived since changing stables and Gold Hod is reeling.off half-miles on the track like a machine. He is not likely to race until Tattersall's Meeting at Randwick on September 11. Lynch. Law is not pleasing his trainer, J. T. Jamieson. The colt was a trifle off-colour a fortnight ago but responded well to a dose of physic and now looks a much improved horse. Unfortunately, he has had to miss the Hobartville Stakes at Warwick Farm. Sydney experienced a Wet Saturday for its weekend meeting but the only fixture was at Ascot, over the, old pony courses. , One of the Epsom Handicap fancies, however, in Gay Chou was produced and soundly beaten in the sixfttrlong flying handicap. He could not go at all on the loose track and lost little or'no caste through his failure. Ascot is a peculiar course and many horses cannot act on it under the best-conditions. The race was won impressively by Buzalong, a four-year-old by The Buzzard who would not have been out of the Epsom Handicap had':his connections not missed the nominations by a, few minutes.. The speedy three-year-old Brazandt set up a big lead, but Buzalong ran to-him in a few strides on the turn and, then went away to win easily. . Deputy Ruler had D. Munro on top arid carried 10.0 in a . seven-furlpng welter at Ascot but failed to fill better than third place. Deputy Ruler had the run of the race; behind Herarde arid Wise Boy but he made no impression on them in the straight. Herarde might develop into one of the most useful horses of the season. He is a sparingly-raced four-year-old by Heroic. •.'■■■■.•■• .■ . • The pony event at Ascot provided an unusual result when the stablemates Conasaii and Blue Devon disputed the finish, both being at long prices. It was rather an answer to the critics who find something wrong with racing all the time. ... '

VEILMOND WINNER.

The Limond horse Veilmond was represented by a* stylish winner at Ascot in Perimond, who carried 8.7 and defeated Tony, another useful three-year-old, in a mile three- and four-year-old handicap. Perimond,-was just a. trifle luckier than Tony in the run round the turn, but the latter was in receipt of 171b. Red Clover and Aladdin, were two New Zealand-bred four-year-olds receiving good lumps of weight from Perimond. .

' Old Dermid showed that a'class horse cannot be kept down by cantering away from six opponents in the Ascot Handicap. On aitrack which did not suit him he had the race won from the first furlong, showing surprising brilliancy : which has not been one of his strong points. ;

F. Musgrave, witli Ajax; The Chanter, park Sky, Beechwood, and Only One, is the first Victorian to arrive in Sydney. Ajax looks fl picture./Hua, who is to have his first race of the season, and Lochlee," will make tip the Melbourne representation which will be very small this year. Melbourne owners and trainers are not interested in Sydney racing these days, for the prizemoney in the south &nd'the betting range are much superior.

J. Fryer produced Wotan,and International at Moonee Valley in Melbourne on Saturday. Wotan, over a sprint course, naturally was not sighted but finished,well. He looked much bigger and stronger than when he -was in Australia last year. International finished second to the perth Cup winner \Manolive over a mile and three furlongs. Manolive is a good stayer and International was no match for him at the finish.
