INTERESTING DAY

NEW ZEALAND V. KENT

COWIE'S GOOD BOWLING

BATTING OF TINDILL

(Received August 27, noon.) CANTERBURY, August 26. There was an interesting day's cricket when the match between Kent and New Zealand was continued. The weather was again fine and the wicket in good order. After the good start made by Kent, who scored 213 for two wickets.on the first day in reply to New Zealand's score of 186, county wickets fell quickly this morning, the innings closing for 321. New Zealand, in the second innings, had made 266 for six wickets at stumps. With Cowie in his best form Kent found runs much harder to obtain today. Eight wickets' fell in an hour, not because the batsmen were taking risks, but because the bowling was really good. Cowie kept a steady length, and, bowling at a good pace, was always menacing. His analysis today was an accurate reflection of the merit of his bowling, being eleven overs, three maidens, 38 runs, and four wickets. Roberts took the last two wickets in quick succession. BRILLIANT OPENING. New Zealand brilliantly opened the second innings. Vivian and Hadley scored nearly two runs a minute, both playing freely in front of1 the wicket. Three wickets were then lost quickly and the batsmen thereupon forfeited aggression for caution. Moloney and Kerr slowly but surely advanced the score till the latter was brilliantly run out owing to smart fielding by Chapman. Moloney and Tindill, by determined batting, added 92 runs. Moloney was patience personified-.and there were 36 singles in his half-century, which took over two hours. Tindill, who stayed nearly an hour and a half, was a workmanlike helpmate in a valuable partnership. The wicketkeeper, since the match against Essex, has batted more like his usual form in New Zealand. Moloney's was another resolute innings at a critical time. He batted for just over three hours and hit five 4's Although he scored slowly he never appeared to be, troubled. Details:— NEW ZEALAND. First innings .. * 186 Second Innings.
