BILLIARDS CHAMPIONSHIP

i The semi-finals of the Wellington provincial amateur billiards championship were played at Messrs. BilUarcs Ltd. showrooms last night, S. Moses, the New Zealand champion, and L.. Pock, the Wellington champion, botn qualifying. In the first game Peek met K. C. Butters, of the Commercial Travellers' Club. The former settled down early, and reached his first century before Butters haa h^d an opportunity to score. The latter was having diHicully in leaves, and they were not running at all favourably. Peek quickly built up on the initial opportunity I gained, and though his breaks were i not-large, they were consistent; They included a 23, 23, 21, 30, 20, 20, 23. His opponent made every endeavour to close the gap, but when at 160 Peek ran to points, 300. Butters's best break was 24. The winner's game throughout was careful and steady. S. Moses and J. McMillan, of th« Fire Brigade Club, began very brightly but in the middle stages the game steadied somewhat. Till tha 100 mark was reached play was very even, but thereafter Moses drew ahead. The score, however, was too close for either to take liberties, and play as a consequence was somewhat cramped. Moses was being favoured with nice leaves, but he did not build on them to any great extent However, he managed to maintain a slight lead on McMillan, though the latter, playing rather better billiards, gradually drew up to threaten his opponent. A difficult shot was eventually McMillan's undoing, and the decision went to Moses, oy 300-278. Among the best breaks were: Moses, 26, 25, 27, 21; McMillan, 21, 25, 36.

Both'game's were capably controlled by Mr. J. Meldrum. The final, 500 up, between Peek and Moses, will be played tonight, commencing at 7.30 o'clock.
