The insurgents, supported by 100 aeroplanes, broke through the defences of Santander at five points. Operations were suspended owing to fog. More than twenty villages have been taken, and the position is favourable for a further advance. Bloody hand-to-hand fighting with knives and bayonets occurred in some
places. The rebels claim that 1500 prisoners, including many officers, were taken. v
