SEARCH FOR OIL
(By Telegraph—Press Association.) DARGAVILLE, August 10. In response to an inquiry about recent remarks regarding the effort to discover oil in New Zealand made m New Plymouth by the Minister of Mines (the Hon. P. C. Webb), the Under-Secretary of Mines, Mr.- A.: Tyndall, said this afternoon: \
"The remarks of the Minister ot Mines in regard to the proposed nationalisation of our oil resources are being misinterpretated to some extent. Contrary to the suggestion that the Minister's statement is discouraging to private enterprise in the search for oil it is a paradoxical truth that no major private oil interest will embarK on a comprehensive drilling programme in New Zealand unless national ownership of potential oil resources is first of all established. Legislative precedents for such a policy already exist in England, Victoria, and Western Australia."
