HALF-CASTE MAORI

GISBORNE, This Day. Charles Frederick Murphy, a halfcaste Maori, who was convicted yesterday on charges of theft and false pretences, disappeared from the Gisborne gaol overnight. He was .last seen by a gaoler, at 11.30 p.m., and his cell was found empty at 6.30 o'clock this morning. It is believed tha.t Murphy cut his way out of the cell with a hacksaw. ' He was declared an habitual criminal at Napier las,t week.

The fact that a fast car. was missing from a Gisborne residence this morning is linked with Murphy's disappearance. ■ The car is a sedan with the. usgistered number of 58864. The escapee was wearing a blue serge suit.He is sft Bin in height and is slightly built. His left leg is shorter than the right and a . fingernail on the left hand is deformed. ,

The escaped prisoner was subsequently recaptured at Ruatoria.. He was in possession of another car, which Jiad been taken from Gisborne.
