"POOR-RICH WIVES"
(To the Editor.)
Sir—ln these days when so.much is being done for all classes,. I should like to draw attention to one set of people who do not get justice. These I shall call the poor-rich wives, many of whom have come under my notice recently. These are wives of men who earn £7 and £8 a week and give thenwives 30s odd for housekeeping, clothine for themselves and children, and the upkeep of household linen, etc. Can a woman entertain and keep up an appearance suitable to a man's position on that miserable allowance? Some men are so pig-headed and unreasonable that they want to know what the wife does with "all the money given her" yet will not look at the figures. Should not a man give a woman a reasonable percentage of his salary? Can our benign Government do anything for these poor-rich wives?—l am, etc.,
CONFIDENTIAL.
