CLOUDS OF STEAM

BUT ALL IN ORDER

People living about Evans Bay and travellers by road may have thought that something serious had happened in the city power station this morning, for clouds of steam poured from the new stack and from'the louvres and windows of the boiler-house. There was no loud bang and no assembly of ambulances, and so things were apparently in order. The steam clouds came from the new Velox boiler, for one of the preliminary tests, applied to all boilers, is to discharge the full steam capacity through the safety valves, and the cold air made the steam clouds denser than they would have appeared on another day. The first Velox is practically ready for the official tests under Government supervision, but the second unit will not be ready for testing for some weeks yet.
