BOYS AT FOOTBALL

(To the Editor.)

Sir, —I wish to express my feelings against the Rugby Union's treatment of schoolboys who were permitted to leave school early to witness the third All Black trials on Wednesday. When the boys arrived at Athletic Park they were informed by the gatekeepers that, unless the adult fee of one shilling was paid by them, they would have to wait until a quarter to three o'clock (over an hour). I would like to know why this step was taken. On the previous Saturday school boys were admitted to the bank . for sixpence, and on that occasion (the North and South Island match) over twenty thousand people were present. On Wednesday, when the gate could not have been more than eight thousand, the Rugby Union imposed the bar, as mentioned. Our school boys these days are extremely keen on the national sport, but the Rugby Union is certainly not doing its duty in fostering the growing spirit by practically refusing admission to budding footballers. —I am, etc.,

SCHOOLBOY,
