THE SIMPLE LIFE
The story of "Pallieter," as told by Felix Timmermans in a novel recently published by Angus and Robertson, is remarkable for its utter simplicity. After the intense morbid emotional chaos of tlr.e average French or Russian novel, and the neurotics of the more sensational American and English works, this tale of Flemish peasant ■life is delightful if only for its lack of complexity. The story unfolds like a Maeterlinck fable, and. indeed, Pallieter is something of a Tyltyl himself in his elemental joys and sorrows. Pallieter is portrayed virile and happy in the steady flow of village life, with Mother Earth his strength, his companion, and bed-fellow. Charmingly illustrated with woodcuts and drawings, "Pallieter" is "something different."
