LOCKNIT AND LOCKIT
It will not be surprising if there is 'confusion in the next few seasons between two horses who are named respectively Locknit and Lockit. Recently a number of sportsmen have been mixed up between Trailer and Tractile, two names not so much alike as the latest pair. .. . Locknit and Lockit are luckily at present separated by the near length ot the Dominion. Locknit, who is trained at Ellerslie by his owner (Mr. A. Rugg) is a three-year-old black gelding by Colossus from the Threadneedle mare Embroidery, and his name is well chosen. Lockit, who is trained at Riccarton for Mr.. D. E. Wanklyn by J. C. Tomkinson, is a two-year-old brown gelding by Siegfried from the Feramorz—Tressida mare Polly Peachum, dam also of McHeath, and it seems rather unfortunate that the name should have been allowed, though otherwise it is an excellent choice. Lockit will be familiar to the few racing enthusiasts who might have read' John Gay's "The Beggar's Opera," in which Polly Peachum, Lockit (the Gaoler at Newgate), and Macheath (the highwayman) appear as characters.
