HUTT COUNTY RATES

"INCREASE INEVITABLE"

General rates for the year ending March 31, 1938, were struck by the Hutt County Council yesterday afternoon' as follows: —Epuni riding, 1.25 d in the £; Heretaunga riding, .6Sd in the £; Horokiwi riding, .78d in . the £; Mungaroa riding, 1.09 din the £; Taupo riding, 1.16 din the £; Wainui-o-mata riding, Id in the £; Wharcroa riding, 1.50 din the £. The hospital and charitable aid rate was fixed at .42d in the £ on the capital value of all rateable property in the county. Drainage, water, and sanitation rates were also struck for certain areas.

Mention was made by councillors of protests raised by ratepayers.

"We should express the regret of the council that it is necessary to increase the rales." said the chairman (Mr. D. R. Hoggard), "but the additional costs now being incurred by the county for wages and material make that increase inevitable. The increase is largely due to the increased holiday traffic which is burdening our roads. No one regrets more than I do having to increase the rates, and I know we have all done our best to find the means to keep them down, but we are not free agents in the matter."
