ONE-LEGGED KIWI

Though it has lost a leg in a trap a kiwi at present cared for by a North Taranaki family is apparently quite healthy (states-an exchange). It is considered that the bird would die it it were released and it has been suggested that application should be made to the Minister o£ Internal Affairs (the Ho'n W. E. Parry) for permission to retain it. The kiwi, which is about a foot higli. was found in an opossum trap near Tarata on Tuesday. Its leg bone was completely severed and, as the leg was hanging only by a sinew, th'c trapper cut it off. .Because kiwis are protected birds the finders have sought advice about the action they should take for. its welfare, as they do not think the crippled bird would exist on its own.
