He" made no showing last month, but in the past a race has made a big difference to him. Triplex, who was recently second to Aube at Dannevirke and is the likely maiden favourite at Hastings tomorrow,, is a three-year-old filly by Joculator (a son of Absurd) out of a Finland mare, and she is owned by Mr. R. B. Nation, of Waipawa. Before sailing for Australia last week J. Fryer stated that on his return to New Zealand he will reside at Ellerslie, and he intends transferring the remainder of his team from Hawera about -the end of November. . A newcomer to the Hawera tracks is the former Hawke's Bay gelding Swift and Sure, who has joined H. Mills's stable. He has been successful as a hack hurdler and is being prepared for the Combined Hunt Meeting at New Plymouth in. September. Wild Chase, after a period of road work, is back on the tracks at Kiccarton doing useful muscling-up exercise. The Paper Money colt is reported to be looking particularly well after his with G. Ridgway up, was responsible for a spectacular display lover eight of the steeplechase fences at Riccarton yesterday morning, and evidently he did not suffer any ill effects from his Trentham experiences. There are some differences in the Waimate Hunt acceptance lists in the south from those telegraphed north. Silver Lark does not appear in the Morven Handicap, and Potent, 8.11, and Hanlow, 8.9, are in the Waimate Hack Handicap field. C Thomson will ride The Ranger in the Hawke's Bay Steeplechase at Hastings tomorrow. W. J. McDowell has been engaged for Master. Hector in the Hack and Hunters' Hurdle Race; and S. Anderson will be on Tractile and Daryill on the flat. The only riding engagement W. J, Broughton has meantime is Marsyas in.the Waitangi Hack Handicap. L. J. Ellis has been a visitor to the tracks at Riccarton this week, but only as a spectator. His left shoulder, which was dislocated in a fall at Oamaru, is mending but it is still strapped up. He hopes to be riding at the Grand National Meeting, but this will depend on the doctor's views. .

Thurina, who broke down _ after jumping the sixth fence of an intended bout over eight fences at Riccarton last week, is unlikely to be persevered with funther. His ownertrainer, Mrs. J. Campbell, was never very hopeful that he would stand; Zilpah, who is due to have her first race in the Maiden at Hastings tomorrow, is a two-year-old chestnut *filly by Rabbi from the Bisogne—-Ici mare Iciogne, who is a full-sister to Mendip, a very useful sort a few years ago. Zilpah is being raced on lease by Messrs. A. Dods and R. Macßae, cf Waipukurau. Daryill, another unraced two-year-old in the maiden . event at Hastings tomorrow, is a bay filly by Lapidary from the Bezonian mare Lady Hill, who was earlier dam of the jumpers Our Comet and Hill Comet. She will carry the colours of Mr. D. H. Newbigin, of Hastings, who holds her on lease from her, breeder, Mi1. C. Wilkie. ' Glanely, ■ who was trained xby J. Carey at Randwick, has done so well in India that he is now in Class 1, under W.I.T.C. rules (Bombay). Qther well-known Australian horses in the same class are Cercello, Cotys, Count Ito, Rivalli, Shivalli the Great (late Hyperion), Synagogue, and Titanium. Among those in Class II are Vauntry, Melason, Maid of Orleans, and Rapsonia, who are seemingly not as good as they were. According to an Ellerslie report, Mata Hari has been getting through some useful work with a view to racing at the Poverty Bay Turf Club's Meeting at the end of the month. She came through her racing at the recent Auckland Meeting in satisfactory manner and promises to be greatly improved in condition when next required to race. She has shown ability to act well in heavy going, and with conditions to suit she should race well at the East Coast fixture.
