CARS STOLEN

A DARING ESCAPADE

ONE OVERTURNED IN DARK

The sight of an overturned light sedan motor-car lying half-way through the wooden fence at the sharp righthand corner on the city side of the Mount Victoria traffic tunnel caused much speculation among motorists and pedestrians bound for work this morning. The car is one of two involved in a very daring night's escapade in which it is believed two young men figured. ■ As far as it has been ascertained, the men concerned first took a car belonging to Leslie Houchen, of Sutherland Road. Lyall Bay. This was taken from Riddiford Street, and was driven to Wellington Road, Kilbirnie. Here it was parked, and the other car, which belongs to Roy Thompson, of Kelburn Parade, was taken. Mr. Thompson discovered his loss after 11 p.m., when he was leaving the friend's house where he was visiting. He at once reported the matter to the Kilbirnie police. The car was found not long after.

Apparently the driver of the car, unaccustomed to it, had endeavoured to take the sharp right-hand turn into Brougham Street at too high a speed. The weather at that time was bad, with rain and low visibility. To get into the position in which it was found, the car must have gone into a broadside skid, hit the kerb, and overturned on to the fence. It was found lying partly on its side, with all four wheels in the air. The bonnet was facing towards Wellington College.

It is understood that two men were seen to get out of the car and run away. Marks in the car indicate that at least one of them suffered injury. There was surprisingly little damage done to the car, considering the treatment it must have received, but the bodywork was badly dented and the paintwork scarred. The matter is in the hands of detectives.
