HUGO MEMORIAL PRIZE

The Hugo Memorial Prize essay competition, conducted by the Wellington. Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, was open to all pupils of public and private secondary schools in the Wellington university district. The number of competitors in the different classes was: Senior 58, intermediate 46, and junior 49, a total of 153. Two prizes were offered in each grade of £1 and 10s each. Mrs. U. Scott, M.A., Miss E. M. Hind, M.A., and Mr. A. N. Burns. M.A., the honorary judges, have made the following awards: — Senior Grade.—Joyce Meade, Raurimu (Education Department Correspondence School), 1; Margaret Parker, Porangahau (Education Department Correspondence School), 2; Yvonne Sebire, Wellington Technical College, highly commended. . Intermediate Grade.—lrene Pine, Wellington Girls' College, 1; Ella Mc-DiEu-mid. Wellington Technical College, 2; Shirley Grant. Nelson Girls' College, highly commended. . Junior Grade.—May Hyde, Ohingaiti (Education Department Correspondence School). 1; Lesley M. Coleman, New Plymouth High School. 2; Rosemary Brunton, New Plymouth, highly commended.
