PEOPLE NOT MISLED

MINISTER'S DENIAL

I By Telegraph- l>ress Association. | CHRISTCHURCH, This Day. A denial that the Minister of Railways or the Department had misled the people of Oamaru and failed in the fofeshore protection work there, was issued by Mr. D. G. Sullivan today, when referring to the recent published report of the Borough Council meeting. Mr. Sullivan pointed out that the Mayor and all the councillors except one had expressed themselves quite satisfied with the work done by the Department. Mr. Sullivan recalled that the protection scheme was originally proposed by Mr. Furkert and endorsed by many leading engineers. He indicated that additional plant was being secured, and he prophesied ■ the successful accomplishment of a difficult task.

In the course -of an address on horticulture and chemistry, given at New Plymouth recently, under the auspices jof the Taranaki council of the New Zealand Institute of Horticulture, Mr. !J. McDowall, in referring to the propa- J ' galion of the tulip in Holland, said i that as much as £450 had been paid for a single bulb. In another instance, in which a bulb was bartered for, goods (and the variety made an amusing list) to the value of £250 were given in exchange for the covet- j cd bulb.
