TRENTHAM CONTRASTS

VARIED WEATHER

THIS MORNING'S GALLOPS

(By "Rangatira.")

There were contrasts at Trentham this morning, with the hills behind the course topped with the winter's first snow and the sun shining brilliantly out of a cloudless sky. It was pleasant weather for training, but not a great deal.of fast work was attempted, most of the horses being given only serviceable tasks. The inside grass circuit, usually reserved for the two-year-olds, was the only track open and it was slushy after rain. Only two horses from the centre figure among the Manawatu nominations, as stables will be busy at the time with their own meeting three days later. Rona Bay and Bonnie Rollox were entered mainly in case the fields should. be small, so their trip is doubtful. The main gallop of the morning saw Rona Bay (W. Doyle) and Korero (C. Burgess), joined by Good.Sun (L. Nesbitt) at the five furlongs, associated over seven furlongs. Rona Bay finished on solidly to oust Good Sun near the post, Korero dropping back in the run home. The time, was lmin 38sec. the last five furlongs in lmin 9Jsec and 'the last-half-mile in 55isec. Korero, though moving short when warming up, came in all right after the gallop. Settlement (L. Faulkiner) and Happy Heels (R. Lorigan) ran half a mile nicely together in 55sec. Settlement is maturing into one of the biggest horses at the centre, and he looks the part as well. Sunny Blonde (Faulkiner) beat Golden Flame (Lorigan) by half a length over half a mile in 53 l-ssec, both horses working attractively. Golden Flame is the name that has been claimed for the promising three-year-old brown Lackham—Atruda filly who has been in work for. some time with Lorigan. Motlier-in-Law (J. McCauley) was a length in front of Rockingham (B. E. Edwards) after half a mile in 53 3-ssec, the latter running about a little near the finish.' Windward (McCauley) was just ahead of Southern Blood (J. Nicolson) after covering six furlongs in lmin 22sec, the last half mile in 54 1-5 sec. Galteemore (A. Bennet) comfortably beat Revival (Doyle) over the same distince in the same time, the last half-mile taking 55scc. Ngaro (Nicolson) was doing it easily in beating First Hand (S. R. Farland) and the Intruder gelding (Doyle) over five furlongs in lmin 7iVec, the last half-mile in 55isec. Ng'aro, who is the three-year-old halfbrother by Tractor to Luna Lux whom

R. W. A. Lewis is training for Mr. R. McDougall, of Pirinoa, went', particularly well in the going. First Hand was finishing as though he will manage a distance ground. Red Sun (A. Tudor) was schooled over four fences and gave his. usual perfect exhibition of jumping. Afterwards he was sent a round of solid pacing Gay Mulls!.. (D. W. Bush) twice jumped the two fences with the sun behind him, leaping big, but otherwise improving on earlier efforts, particularly in the speed at which he went at the obstacles. i W. J. Wood had his new horse Polabian on the track.. Polabian is a big gelding and Wood hopes that he will develop into a useful hurdler in the spring. He will be raced on lease by his trainer. -■•..'' R. W. A. Lewis returned from Auckland yesterday, and Billy Boy and Shy will be coming down on Monday. The hunter Erase, who has not yet been started, is being left at Auckland till after the Pakuranga Hunt Meeting. Lewis sa?/s the fioin" in the north was too heavy for Billy Boy, whom he expects to'perform better at Trentham and Riccarton. Shy has been only jogged about ' lately, but will probably resume racing B& Trentham.
