NEW YORK WOMAN'S GUILT
(Received June 19, 9 a.m.) NEW YORK, June 17. Mrs. Helen Tiernan pleaded guilty to murdering her daughter, and faces a term of imprisonment of from twenty years to life. The police stated in May that Mrs. Tiernan, aged 25, a widowed embroidery worker, had confessed that she killed her daughter, whose body was found in the woods near a New York suburban settlement, and attempted to kill her son. Believing that both were dead, she sprinkled petrol on the brushwood, ignited it, and fled. Her j motive, it was stated, was a desire to remarry and a belief that her apartment was too small for both the children and her prospective husband. She ] stated: "I wanted to kill them, not to hurt them." Later she amended her confession, implicating her sweetheart. This the police were inclined to disbelieve. I
