PRELIMINARY PARTIES
. The Thorndon Lawn Tennis Club held its annual dance last night at the Mayfair Cabaret.
; Beforehand the president of the club, Mr. Philip Cooke, and Mrs. Cooke entertained over 70 club members at a sherry party which took place at their home in Halswell Street, and later c they and their party went on to the • Grand Hotel to a buffet dinner party 1 arranged by Mrs. F. H. Whatley, Mrs. R. E. Tripe, and the Misses Mollie Macassey, Patricia Marshall, and Georgette Handyside. Altogether therje were over 100 people at the dinner, ; which, although it was of the buffet ' variety, was served to the guests as they sat at small tables in the private dining-room. Green, maroon, and gold, the club's colours, made at.-active decorations against the cream-lacquered walls, and the tables were charmingly decorated with Iceland poppies. There were also several small private dinners before the dance, Mrs. V. Horton and her daughter, Miss Ngaire Horton, and Mr. John Peacock and his daughter, Miss Margo Peacock, being the hosts at two of the parties. Mr. Peacock "and his daughter gave their party in '. honour of Miss Letty Levieri, of -England, and Mr.' Dan Webster, who announced their engagement yesterday.: The dance, which commenced at 9 o'clock, was so successful that when it ended at 1 a.m., and after hot soup had been served, many of the dancers were inspired to visit the Crow's Nest, where they continued to dance for an hour or two. The Mayfair Cabaret was very gaily decorated, the club colours and bowls of Iceland poppies and narcissi mingled with birch making bright splashes of colour. Mr. and Mrs. Cooke >vere the official host and hostess. Mrs. Cooke, who was wearing a charming gown of pale blue quilted cloque with a frosted silver design of flowers, was presented by the committee with a shoulder spray of pink cyclamen. She presented the prizes to the club champions, Mr. Don France. Dr. and Mrs. Latham, and Miss Mollie Macassey. The dance committee present included Mrs. F. H. Whatley (who was wearing a gold and blue lame coatee with a long black skirt), Mr. and Mrs. Claude Batten (the latter in midnight blue crepe), Miss Mollie Macassey (silver brocaded white crepe), Miss Patricia Marshall (silver threaded hyacinth blue crepe), and Dr. Robert Stout and Mr. Charles Evans-Scott. Among others present were Mr. and Mrs. W. Mantell-Harding. Mr. and Mrs. Wilfred Leicester, Mr. and Mrs. E. M. Hunt, Mr., and Mrs. Bernard Johns, Mr; and Mrs. W. G. Turnbull, Mr. and Mrs. R. E.
