LEVEL CROSSINGS

PLANS FOR ELIMINATION

NO. 9 HIGHWAY DISTRICT

(Special to the "Evening Post")

PALMERSTON N., This Day.

The matter of eliminating at least some of the dangerous level crossings between Paekakariki and Palmerston North was discussed at the annual meeting of the No. 9 District Highways Council, which met in Palmerston North. A definite programme of improvements is to be placed before the Highways Board. It is planned to erect an overhead ramp at the Ohau crossing, and tenders are being called for a similar structure at the Manakau crossing. A departure from the usual procedure is contemplated at Waikanae, where a subway is considered more suitable. Tenders, it is reported, are already let for an overhead bridge nt Paraparaumu and the one at Otaki is under way. It is hoped to start the first three works mentioned this year. An overhead bridge is also suggested for the Plimmerton crossing, but it is not expected that anything will be done this year.
