CROCUS AN IMPROVER
Although Crocus has not been raced since competing at Epsom in April, few will forget the four-year-old's effort in winning the Devonport Handicap. She was not particularly smart to begin on that occasion, but the manner in which she responded when asked for a little extra at the home turn was very impressive, and a big future is confidently predicted for her.
Crocus has done very little racing; in fact, she has had only three starts, for a first, third, and once unplaced, the last-named occasion being when her driver was tipped out of the sulky at the Wellington Meeting in March. The mare has done everything required of her in her s latest training efforts, and she should parade a very fit mare when the Mangere Handicap comes up for decision on Saturday. F. J. Smith will be behind her, and the daughter of Great Bingen and Doldrum is not likely to lack anything in the matter of reinsmanship.
