WELLINGTON WOMEN

PLACES AND PRICES

Miss L. M. Haswell (Wellington) toured with a party of New Zealanders in Belgium, Holland, and Germany, going as far as Cologne. Several days were: spent in Brussels and a motor tour was made in the Ardennes into Germany, states "The Post's" London representative, writing on May 26. The travellers found the German people very friendly and most helpful. Prices in that country are rigidly controlled, and very little profiteering was encountered. In France and Belgium conditions are not so controlled. Miss Haswell was very much interested at The Hague to see tbe very fine apartments that the Government . has recently erected for the working people. These are let to them at merely a nominal rental—7s 6d and 10s per week —according to the wages received. These fine concrete buildings with rounded corners glassed, gave her the impression that the very maximum of sunshine would be obtained, and :on inquiry she found that this was the reason for this particular type of build-

ing. Further, she was told that every apartment had one room at least overlooking the sea, and the buildings had been erected quite close to the beach so that a healthy and natural play-, would be available for the 'children. On every hand was evidence of the care and thought that are bestowed on. the .working people. Miss Haswell visited the beautiful Peace Palace and the famous deer park at The Hague. She then went on to Delft, Amsterdam, Rotterdam, and back to Belgium. The travellers returned to London in time for the Coronation and then went to Spithead for the Naval Review.
