superior. Sandy Dix met with a check entering the final stages, yet Lord Val was still well behind him at the time. Sandy Dix is on the small side, too, and weight may be a problem with him later pn. It is likely that he will be at Trentham next month. The other hurdlers at the Great Northern Meeting do not call for much comment, for they were outclassed by the trio referred to. Master Musk went a fine race in the big contest, considering that it was his first for some time, and many good judges plumped for him on the second day,- when his effort did not measure up to his first outing. Tout le Monde did not get beyond the first hurdle in the Northern, his only appearance, so his future prospects can only be based upon his promising earlier efforts. PROMISING RECRUITS. In the minor grade, Collision was outstanding and he may be a real problem for other hurdlers to dispose of at Trentham next month. While the hacks he defeated on the opening day were weak, there still remains his fine win over some good ones in the Coronation Hurdles at Te Rapa' a fortnight earlier, so he can be referred, to as one of the best of the hurdles prospects for events ahead.
Gay Broney, a horse with good flat performances up to a mile and a half, chased Collision' home the first day and then on his next appearance fail-' ed badly. His performances on the whole were by no means good. Lady England has a lot of pace and may now go dn with it, for there was plenty of merit in. her win. The most interesting'novice hurdler seen out at the meeting was Scotland's half-brother, Bass, who had got on the winning list for the ' first time only three weeks earlier through winning a maiden event at Te Rapa. He revealed jumping ability and a lot of speed, and it was only sheer bad luck that brought him down at the second to last fence on the final day when he arid Lady England were a street ahead of the field. The latter took off the best part of a length in front. For a novice this was an invitation to disaster, and it came, for Bass could not bridge the hurdle with his leap and he crashed through. Provided he has suffered no ill effects from this fall, Bass should not be long in getting on the winning list . among the hack hurdlers.
