SYNOPSIS OF LAST 24 HOURS. ■ A vigorous westerly depression has covered tho eastern Tasman Sea and New Zealand, and consequently strong north-west to .westerly winds hare prevailed,-'rising to gale force a* places about and south of Coolc Strait. Easter* coastal areas, except for some scattered rain last night, have had mainly fair weather but elsewhere unsettled, squally conditions, and intermittent rain have been experienced, heavy falls and some thunder occurring at Pla«« about Cook Strait and in tho western district* of the South Island.
