The New Zealand cricketers batted first when the match against Northamptonshire was commenced today, and made 334, the county scoring 24 for two wickets before' stumps were drawn. The weather was fine and the'wicket hard and fast. The teams are:— New Zealand.—M. L. Page (captain), M. W. Wallace, G. L. Weir, A. W. Roberts, M. P. Donnelly, J.. R. Lamason, E. W. Tindill, J. L, Kerr, J. A. Dunning, W. N. Carson, N. Gallichan. Northamptonshire.—W. C. Brown, A. W. Snowden, E. W. Clark, Nelson, J. E. Timms, P. Davis, D. Brookes, R. J. Partridge, J. Buswell, N. Grimshaw, K. C. James. The New Zealanders had a satisfactory day on a good wicket, and main-tained-a scoring rate of more than, a run a minute all day.v Xerr and Tindill, in an attractive partnership, gave the side a useful start before the former played one which was well off the wicket into the stumps. Wallace and Donnelly added 96 runs in 80 minutes. Wallace was not so free as usual, but played all his strokes .cleanly in, .a- sound half-century. DONNELLY AGGRESSIVE. Donnelly was confident and aggressive, driving, cutting, and pulling with fine freedom. He hit a dozen 4's in an attractive innings lasting just under two hours before he was brilliantly caught one-handed in the slipsWeir celebrated his birthday with his best innings of the tour. He batted with methodical deliberation, but held the innings together! after lunch, seeing four men come and go and being the eighth man out The last six wickets fell for 130 runs before keen bowling and fielding, a feature of which was the capital wicketkeeping of James.! the former New Zealander, who allowed only one bye and took two catches.
