ESPERANTO CLUB
The weekly meeting of the Wellington Esperanto Club was held last Monday in. the clubroom, Nathan's Building, Grey Street. Mr. Bertram Potts presided. Greetings were received from the Hutt Valley Esperanto Club: Correspondence'was received from Esperanto clubs and individual EsperanT tists in England, Scotland,. France, Hungary. Norway, Netherlands, Spain, U.S.A., Philippine Islands, and Japan. Postage stamps with text in Esperanto were exhibited, issued by the Brazilian Government to mark the occasion of the recent International Fair held in Rio de Janeiro. Since the club last met official greetings had been sent to Esperanto Clubs in Finland and India. Mr. Vernon J. Leek, D.8.E.A., vice-delegate of the International Esperanto League, spoke on the wide ramifications of this new organisation with its representatives in all the leading cities of the world. ' After the enrolment of new members classes were organised, the senior members forming conversation, translation, and reading groups.
The programme period had a novel turn and proved highly successful. Two weeks ago the names of eight members had been put into a hat as well as eight words of the well-known sequence:' tinker, tailor, soldier, sailor, richman, poorman, beggarman. thief. Lots were drawn and each, member had to prepare an original and entertaining item on the subject drawn with power to co-opt the services 6f other members. The result was a series of eight original sketches ranging from melodrama to tragedy. Mr. Henri W. Thorns (Tinker) with Miss M. Stirling presented "Amika Vizito" ("A Friendly Visit"); Mr. Joseph Thomas (Tailor), "Adam—La Unua ~ Tajloro" ("Adam—The First Tailor"); Miss K. Stirling (Soldier) in "La Soldato Memoras".("The Soldier Remembers"); Mr. V. J. Leek (Sailor), "La Maristo Renkontas Mar-Serpenton" ("The Sailor Meets a Sea Serpent"); Miss Florence Bennett (Richman) in "Kiel Akiri Multe da Mono!" ("How to Acquire a lot of Money"), assisted by Mrs. P. Campbell, Messrs. J. Allan, P. McCrea. Anton Vogt, Vernon J. Leek, and D. Milligan in a series of dramatic incidents each featuring a method of acquiring wealth; Mr. David Kirk (Foorman) on "Sola Kun Mia Jurnalo" ("Alone with My Newspaper"); Mr. C. Toomer (Beggarman) in "La Blinda Soldato" ("The Blind Soldier"), a»sisted by Mr. D. Kirk; Mr. Les Smith in "Klam la Stelisto Revenis" ("When the Thief Returned"). Mr. P. McCrea was stage manager. It was announced that next week the programme would be in the hands of Mr. J. Allan.
