EMPIRE AIR MAILS

PARTNERSHIP RESULT

STATEMENT BY TRYON

SPEEDY SERVICES

(British Official Wireless.) (Received May 19, 1,p.m.)

RUGBY, May 18.

The Postmaster-General (Maj or G. C. Tryon) entertained, to luncheon today, on behalf of his Majesty's Government, delegates to the Imperial Conference and' officials of overseas Government Departments. In proposing the toast of "Imperial Communications" Major Tryon said that a great Empire air-mail scheme would, be the happy result of Imperial partnership. Under that scheme the new Empire fly-ing-boats built for Imperial Airways would inaugurate epoch-making development in the carriage of mails. "The principle underlying pur policy," he said "is that' transmission by air should be. regarded not as something exceptional, but Just as an ordinary form of transport. We contemplate what we call an all-up service. Postage on first-class mail sent from.the United Kingdom will be lid per half ounce for letters and Id for postcards.

The services will be even more 'speedy than those provided by< air at the present time and they will become faster as time, goes on. A start is to bo .made in about a month with a service to South and: East Africa. SimiJar services to India and Malaya will, I hope, begin: at the end of this year, and a service to Australia early in 1938."

In reference' to television the Post-master-General said that the range at present was usually about 25 miles; but they hoped, that some day television would reach other parts of the Empire. ,
