TIPPING ABOARD SHIPS

Referring to the statements reported !to have been made in evidence in Melbourne by a shipping clerk as stated in a cablegram.in the "Evening Post" of April 29, the chairman of the Australian and New Zealand Passenger Conference in Sydney, Mr. E. A. Eva, states that in the opinion of the members of the conference, which represents all the principal British lines carrying passengers between New Zealand and Australia and the United Kingdom, the statements are likely to create misapprehension in the minds of those contemplating a voyage to England. Tipping on board ship is, as elsewhere, entirely voluntary, and the amounts mentioned in the report appear in normal circumstances to be unduly high.
