HORNABROOK'S SUCCESS

The Masterton Golf Club's annual tournament was concluded yesterday on the Landsdowne links in fine weather. J., P. Hornabrook succeeded in retaining the Wairarapa championship title by defeating T. H, Horton at the twentieth hole, after a keen contest. . The tournament. which opened last Saturday, proved most enjoyable, many- visiting players being present. In spite of the rain the: greens played very well. In the semi-finals, played yesterday morning the match between J. P. Hornabrook and jy. L. Black was all square to the eighth hole. Hornabrook took the ninth, tenth, twelfth, and fourteenth, winning.4 and 2, and finished the round in 73. In the other contest, T. H. Horton v. G. Horhe, the, match was all square . at the ninth. Home took the eleventh and fourteenth, being 2 Up at th§ fifteenth. His drive at the sixteenth rolled down the pathway for about twenty yards, Hor-: ton winning the hole, and the match was all square at the seventeenth. At the eighteenth Home missed a putt for • the match, which went to the twentyfirst, where Horton won with a birdie 2.
In the final, played in the afternoon before a large gathering of spectators, bogey s's and 4's were scored at. the first and second holes, Hornabrook, with a, long putt, getting a birdie 2 at the third. Horton replied with a birdie 3 at the fourth. At the fifth Hornabrook laid Horton a halfstymie and took the hole 4 to 5. At the sixth Hornabrook's approach chip hit Horton's ball, driving it up about four-feet to be dead. ■ Hornabrook missed with his putt and gave the hole to Horton, 4 to 5. The seventh was halved in bogey s's. Hornabrook took the eighth in bogey 3to Horton's 4, Horton taking three putts. At the ninth it was Hornabrook's turn to have three putts, Horton winning 5 -to 6, the competitors starting on the homeward journey all square.. Hornabrook won the tenth and eleventh jfi bogey 4's, to be 2 up, but Horton caught one back at the twelfth when Hornabrook missed a three-foot putt. A weak chip by Hornabrook at the thirteenth saw Horton draw all square with a bogey 3. At the fourteenth Horton, who was now playing the better golf, sank a long putt for a birdie 3 to Hornabrook's 4, Horton being lup for the first time. Hornabrook hit a beautiful shot to the green at the fifteenth, while Horton went into the rough. Horton recovered to within five feet of the pin, and the hole was halved in birdie 3. At the | sixteenth - Horton laid Hornabrook a stymie and the hole was halved in 5 s. At the seventeenth Horton had a chance of clinching the match with an Bft putt, but the ball rolled off and the hole was halved in bogey 4. . Both £ot good drives at • the eighteenth, but Horton pushed his second, out while Hornabrook did not quite get on to his shot, leaving himself about 60 yards from .the pin in. the middle of the fairway. The gallery gasped when Hornabrook's chip shot ran in for an eagle 3. The nineteenth was halved in bogey 's's. 'At the twentieth Horton's second was nearer the pin, but his putt ran right over the.hole and about 4ft past. His return putt stayed on the lip of the hole, and Hornabrook took the championship with a bogey 4.
